ANTONIO

Antonio Lopez was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1943. At the age of twelve he was awarded a scholarship to the Traphagen School of Fashion and was later accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he embarked on a career in fashion illustration. Whilst at FIT he worked for Fairchild Publications, publisher of numerous newspapers including the fashion trade paper Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) and then secured a job at the New York Times.
His freelance work began in the early 60s’ for fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, Vanity and Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine for whom he captured everyone from Jerry Hall, Grace Jones and Mick Jagger to Audrey Hepburn, Paloma Picasso and Marlene Dietrich. He was the only illustrator at that time to be commissioned regularly by Vogue. In New York in 1964, he met the couturier Charles James and created an illustrated record of all of the clothes James had ever designed. Their collaboration continued for more than ten years. In 1969 Lopez and his creative and business partner Juan Ramos moved to Paris, where he helped to introduce American Pop Art to the City. Lopez died in 1987 aged forty-four years old.
