ANTONIO


Antonio Lopez was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico in 1943. At the age of twelve he was awarded a scholarship to the Traphagen School of Fashion and was later accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he embarked on a career in fashion illustration. Whilst at FIT he worked for Fairchild Publications, publisher of numerous newspapers including the fashion trade paper Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) and then secured a job at the New York Times.
His freelance work began in the early 60s’ for fashion magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, Vanity and Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine for whom he captured everyone from Jerry Hall, Grace Jones and Mick Jagger to Audrey Hepburn, Paloma Picasso and Marlene Dietrich. He was the only illustrator at that time to be commissioned regularly by Vogue. In New York in 1964, he met the couturier Charles James and created an illustrated record of all of the clothes James had ever designed. Their collaboration continued for more than ten years. In 1969 Lopez and his creative and business partner Juan Ramos moved to Paris, where he helped to introduce American Pop Art to the City. Lopez died in 1987 aged forty-four years old.

DAVID DOWNTON


David Downton has attended Paris Haute Couture shows for more than a decade. His illustrations chart both the back stage and front of house of the couture world. His portfolio includes portraits of models Erin O’Connor, Lily Cole, Linda Evangelista and Carmen.
His reports have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Saturday Telegraph, Harpers Bazaar (Australia) and The Independent as well as Visionaire and Vogue and he was commissioned to create an illustrated couture portfolio for Vogue China.
Commercial clients include Tiffany's New York, SAKS 5th Avenue, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Burberry, and the British Fashion Council. His work has been exhibited in solo shows at the Conningsby Gallery, London (1998 and 1999) and at the Couture Voyeur show at London College of Fashions Fashion Space Gallery (2006). Downton has also collaborated with supermodel Erin O’Connor on a number of occasions including shows at the Rootstein Gallery, New York (2002) and at the Joyce Ma Gallery, Palais Royal, Paris (2003).
In 2006 he was commissioned by Brown’s to design the Christmas window display and invitation for their South Moulton Street store. His work has featured on the front cover of a special edition of Jane Austen's Emma, produced by the Daily Telegraph†and on the cover of Cally Blackman’s 100 Years of Fashion Illustration (2007).

Fashion Illustration - GRAYSON PERRY

GRAYSON PERRY


Grayson Perry is an artist and potter. He won the Turner Prize in 2003 for his works in ceramic, which has become one of his most celebrated mediums. Born in Chelmsford, Essex in 1960 he attended Braintree College of Further Education and then Portsmouth Polytechnic where he studied Fine Art and also enrolled in pottery classes. In the early 80s he became a member of the Neo-Naturist group, collaborating in their film and performance works. In 2005 he was Guest Fashion Editor of Spoon magazine and was commissioned to report on the summer Paris collections. He has exhibited internationally as a solo artist with major presentations of his work at the Barbican Art Gallery, London (2002) and with My Civilization at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (2007). He has also participated in numerous group shows including Protest and Survive at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2000) and New Labour at the Saatchi Gallery, London (2001). Publications include ‘Grayson Perry’, Victoria Miro gallery, 2004 and The Charms of Lincolnshire by Grayson Perry, 2006. He lives and works in London.
